The Epic of Yicheng's Founder and the Salt River Goddess
The Founder of Yicheng in SHU
The legendary figure who established the mythical city of Yicheng in SHU, located in modern-day Sichuan (Szechwan) in the south-central part of China, is recognized as the hero. He is acknowledged as the progenitor of the BA tribe that dwelled in the region. Wu Xiang, the son of Chengli and a descendant of Da Hao, was his given name.
The Contest for Leadership
According to the narrative, five CLANS residing in the area inhabited a pair of mountain caves on Mount Wuluo. Up until Wu Xiang's era, they had all been subjects of another deity. Eventually, the clans decided to govern themselves, leading to a competition where Wu Xiang vied against champions from each clan to determine the rightful ruler. The competition involved throwing swords at a rock, and Wu Xiang's was the sole successful attempt, earning him the right to rule. To ensure his leadership, a subsequent contest involving clay boats took place, and once again, Wu Xiang emerged as the sole victor.
Encounter with the Salt River Goddess
The Lord of the Granary, as Wu Xiang came to be known, sailed his boat down to the Salt River, where he encountered the captivating SALT RIVER GODDESS. Despite her plea for him to stay with her indefinitely, the Lord of the Granary declined. However, during the night, the goddess visited him in his sleep and transformed into a bug. Gathering other bugs, she obscured the sky, disorienting the Lord of the Granary. Unable to discern her among the swarm, he proposed marriage, gifting her servant a green SILK belt as a token of their engagement. When she adorned the belt, he identified her and dispatched her with an arrow, thereby clearing his path to return home.
