Dong Dong

《Classic of Mountains and Seas · Northern Mountain Classic》

Three hundred li further north is Mount Taixi. It has no vegetation but is rich in gold and jade. There is a beast here that looks like a sheep, with one horn and one eye, with its eye located behind its ear. It is called the Jiji. Its call sounds like "zi." The Huotuo River originates here and flows east into the Lou River. The Yenu River originates on its sunny side and flows south into the Qin River.

  • One version says that the Jiji is an auspicious beast, and its appearance signifies a bountiful harvest for the year.
  • Another version says that the Jiji is an ominous beast, and its appearance in the palace foretells chaos and disaster.
